JANGAON

Craft cluster initiative by the Government of India

A craft cluster brings together a detailed report about the producers, suppliers, service providers, related industries and associated institutions to develop, promote and market the products.

As a student of batch 2010-1014 fashion design, National Institute of Fashion Technology, I got the opportunity to do research with my class on Jangaon craft cluster located in Warangal district Andhra Pradesh. This area has a large weavers society where craftsmen are divided into various self-help groups named differently through government. They specialize in the weaving of pochampally Ikat silk sarees. We went to the identified areas and surveyed the different aspects of their craft and lifestyle. With this survey, we got to know the present scenario of the weaving community with details about their working conditions and problems they are facing and the lack of government support.

After the primary research with the artisans, we also went for a market survey to various shops selling pochampally ikat in Hyderabad. There are a lot of government and private stores who source their products directly from the weaver's community.

This experience was a real eye-opener to the kind of lifestyle that people have in the villages and difficulties faced by the local artisans in India.

Pebble Creek High Montessori School

I genuinely believe that being a teacher is a great opportunity to make a difference and mold young minds. In November 2014, I taught art to the students of Pebble Creek High Montessori School. The experience was truly one of a kind.
